Bathroom Mold Prevention Tips

Bathrooms will typically have higher humidity levels than anywhere else in your home. Regular showering and daily use provides the opportunity for mold to begin growing on drywall, baseboards, trim, and even contents. Painting and caulking over mold is time consuming and will not actually solve the problem, but rather put off a problem that will eventually worsen. The best course of action is prevention. Here are some tips to keep humidity levels low and prevent mold growth from ever occurring:

  • Use your ventilation fans! This is exactly what they are made for. Leave them on for at least 10 minutes after each shower. If you do not have a fan, place a dehumidifier and try to keep the humidity level below 60%.
  • Leave bathroom doors open to allow for additional ventilation.
  • If you have glass shower doors, use a small squeegee to remove excess moisture from the glass.
  • Keep contents to a minimum. Bottles, children's toys, and other contents can collect water and hide microbial growth. Be sure to clean the contents every time you clean your shower.
  • Repair leaking faucets and shower heads immediately to prevent standing water.
  • Purchase a mold resistant shower curtain liner.
  • Regularly check for microbial growth or moisture under sinks, behind toilets, and along baseboards in order to address problems as soon as possible.

Any home can quickly become infested with mold with the introduction of a water source, like a plumbing leak. Mold can spread throughout a structure in as little as 48-72 hours, and can produce allergens and irritants that have the potential to cause health effects. If you have had a water damage in your home or business and the structure was not dried properly you could potentially have mold. Our team can inspect your home or business for any moisture problems or mold.

If you suspect that your home or business has a mold problem, call SERVPRO of North Huntsville at 256-534-1177 to schedule an appointment. We can send a team member out to do an assessment of your structure and determine the best course of action. We also offer mold testing.

Does Your Huntsville Home Have A Mold Problem?

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
